THE RIGHT TO KNOW AND THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING IT after 25 years
how could the best intentions go so wrong ! 400,000 streams missing from Clean Water Act polluted stream lists !
CEEI, a 501c3, was founded by Max Casebeau, former publisher of the Silicon Valley Tech News and the Peninsula Electronics Tech News 15 years ago, when he discovered that the media in Idaho was not doing an effective job of covering the state's response to the Clean Water Act.
Publicity was primarily limited to printing press releases distributed by the EPA on how many streams were affected. However, it was apparent the problem extended far beyond the 34 reported to be in trouble when Idaho balked at a lawsuit from the Idaho Sporting Congress, ( Ron Mitchell director) which had complained that 962 streams should be listed. Although Judge Dwyer of Seattle's Federal Court had agreed, unfortunately, only two papers in Idaho published the outcome -- the Moscow-Pullman Express and the Idaho Falls News.( but they never printed the total list)
CEEI sent out a 38 page list identifying each stream and its problems to all the media in Idaho. The situation was so immense it wasn't published or broadcast by anyone in the state. Their response was their fear they would lose half their subscribers and advertisers.
According to a close personal friend attending the University of Idaho for his PHD, the students who were spending four days studying the 303d section of the Clean Water Act, were amazed when confronted with the many streams that were polluted in their state. It was the magnItude of the problem, which was documented, they found difficult to believe.
Two years later CEEI found it necessary to publish the entire list of polluted streams in the United States.. Each state has about 500 streams that are polluted. It was also discovered that only 19% 0f all streams in the US and territories, have never been surveyed ! CEEI estimates that at least 400,000 streams are missing from the 303(d0 polluted stream list under the Clean Water Act. ( CEEI www.apsrs.org)
According to the Miami Herald, who have documented over 50 examples of BUSH WHITE HOUSE lack of environmental responsibility, our government has changed the administration of the laws by either cutting off funds or simply not acting on lawsuits, and, by re-writing regulations not needing congressional approval, they have been able to escape press scrutiny. The increase in the construction of coal fired power plants in this country spewing out mercury, known to be destructive to lakes, streams and human beings -- especially children -- is evidence that the harm this is doing to everyone is also being ignored.
CEEI and those companies and organizations with established funds directed to help solve environmental problems, take the responsibility of disseminating information on local, state and national issues of concern, with the purpose of informing the public of the true facts of the state of our environment, as documented by professional research scientists. THE LESSON IS CLEAR. if the Obama Administration is counting on the media (whats left of it) to promote their environ- climate agenda they will be sadly mistaken. Look up the record. Not one listing of all the major state polluted stream lists have ever been reprinted in the major dailies or minor weeklies in 25 years by timid publishers !
This is another reason why their are so many Ph.D's running around with no real knowledge of the environment or climate because papers couldn't sell advertising or subscriptions for 25 years, or because the ranchers, farmers, loggers , miners, fishermen and hunters were and are damn mad at the enviro / climate mess and the people who produced it ?"Lets try education instead of law suits" !
The big environmental advocates needs to be honest about their corporate support otherwise the education community is the last to know what is happening !
