| BULLETIN DISCUSSION OF PRIORITIES |
FOR THE NEW PRESIDENT ELECT, AND THE CONGRESS.
Fossil fuel energy resources are still out of control. This must be Congress and the President's first
priority.
The 2nd Biggest climate problem now and in the foreseeable future is the management of fresh water world wide for drinking, and agriculture. In short , CEEI believes that climate drought, and “climate” floods ARE ONE AND THE SAME PROBLEM. Our problem is to shield this planet by reducing green house gases , methane, CO2. Reducing coal use by using natural gas would do this up to 90% for power plants, transportation, over a period of 20 years. It a bridge to a hydrogen economy. Lets not fall into the gasoline trap. internal combustion engines can run on natural gas ( propane).
THE IOWA FLOODS, 8 RECENT HURRICANES, A HUGE CYCLONE IN MYANMAR, SEVERE TORNADOES IN THE PLAINS STATES are a beginning of a laundry list that unfortunately doesn't leave a calling card !
World wide, over a million children a year are dieing from water shortages or contamination. A dependable water supply is doubtful even within the United States. Huge areas of ground water are about exhausted in the central plain states. The Ogalala aquifer is very precarious. The Central California valley region has abandoned 250,000 acres of farm land. ( Its water system is barely able to support it booming population). Power shortages will be the rule soon in the northern and southern California areas. Areas in the Southwest find them selves wondering if the Colorado River rain shed can be depended upon. The Lake Powell dam is half full, The South west face tough decisions.
THE STATE OF GEORGIA (IN THE US) HAS EXPERIENCED unheard of drought for the last year particularly Atlanta. The entire world in awaiting the UN Drought Survey ! The arctic regions are going through unheard of drought, loss of sea ice, permafrost depletion, species at risk, and now Darfur region has 18,000,000 people at risk. Famine.
CEEI believes that in the future, the melting of the Greenland and the Polar regions will adversely affect the CLIMATE in tropical, desert, coastal and mountain areas. sooner than is generally thought. Right now the N Atlantic Current ( the gulf stream) has diverted some water east ward ( just below Iceland) toward the Med. This is 1500 miles lower in latitude. The Woods Hole people are on the research ship Knorr and will soon have their report and make some sense of this development. Huge permafrost regions in Siberia the size of Germany and France put together are now thawing. this stored carbon will produce unheard of amounts of co2.
In the Future
Agriculture areas may have to be moved. Existing dams may not be big enough or will simply dry up,or could be mined by dredges for top soil and for more storage space. This is what is on the planet menu, and more of the same. Fossil fuel energy resources are still out of control.
CEEI has been tracking 1010 climate and related categories) indicators for 5 years. The volume of line items has increased from our partner Mr Google daily, from 2000 a day to around 3900 line items daily. (These are stories "indicators" impacting the planet it's systems and people !)
For Detailed info, see the ACIA Arctic Climate Impact Assessment at the (www.acia.org) or the ( www.ceei-climate.org) this report was ordered by the Clinton Administration and a report ( University of Alaska) was made to Congress in November 2004. |
