GLOBAL CLIMATE CONCERNS
I read with dismay Mr. Pluntze’s climate statement about the paralyzing cold and snow that particularly hit Georgia, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania last week. According to Pluntze “…the scientists are completely wrong, its getting colder!”
Simply stated, the climate is getting warmer. There is more moisture in the atmosphere and more evaporation which will fall as rain or snow and the intensity of our storms will get bigger and more damaging. Does anyone remember Hurricane Katrina? Does anyone remember the big 50,000 acre Ketchum fire? Our forests were, and are, still drought dry! Apparently seven years of drought announcements for the entire state has not yet reached certain people in the Wood River Valley.
The scientists never predicted that it wouldn’t get unseasonably cold, but they did say that the average temperature is rising. When that happens, more water rises and evaporates as moisture in the atmosphere and falls as rain or snow -- if it is cold enough to condense or freeze. This means that Sun Valley may get more snow or rain, but overall we are still experiencing drought conditions. This is the eighth year and odds are the weather will continue to be much like it is now -- unpredictable over the long run. A hundred years ago in Ketchum the snow accumulation in one winter season often reached 22 feet.
The “I don’t believe in global warming” thinking seems to be growing again with scientists taking the brunt of it. No wonder they are reluctant to speak out. That is what is scary. Sometimes people all over the world can, because of mistrust and disbelief, be a treachery to truth and logic. Even though Magellan sailed around the world proving it was round -- the “flat earth society” still exists. No one ever said that reason based on facts was perfect. Occasionally mistakes are made, especially when the economics of that change enters the decision.
To address world-wide climate concerns, the Center for Environmental Education and Information (CEEI)maintains a climate archive with 9.5 million line items in which there are 1051 related categories. Five thousand line items are down loaded into this archive per day. This information is now available to the public. (For details contact CEEI@cox.net ) Next year students, from 8th grade to post graduates, will be able to download these archives with their own key words to search data that has been missing on local streams, animals and plants for 8 years, and be able to write a paper that will be current. Using this program students can also add what they learn to their own discoveries and get their research assignments done 50% faster. Quality education requires more teachers, not less.
The truth is that over land the planet is actually averaging 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit higher. But when moderated by the oceans and their currents, it works out to be about one degree increase. Keep in mind that five years ago in the Arctic it was about 25 degrees above overage. This is why it is so important that we pay attention to what the weather is doing everywhere. The climate is measured over the long term and the US weather service is running stats. This is fine, but it’s important to remember that the natural process has been interrupted. The excessive accumulation of moisture in the air can and has caused flooding everywhere, especially when it is out of step with the seasons. As an example, California has been a victim of floods, mudslides, and fire. And then there is the El Nino. The warm Pacific current has been diverted to going north instead of south. This has been going on occasionally for years, which has caused all the moisture in California, Arizona, Colorado, Texas and the east coast this year. This next week another Pacific storm is headed for NYC and New England. That makes three in a row and is more than an INCONVIENENCE ! It is a message !
